Breathes there the man with soul so dead,
Who never to himself hath said,
‘This is my own, my native land!’
By Walter Scott

This poem reminded me of the complex relationship Indians have with patriotism. While national holidays like August 15th and Republic Day evoke strong feelings of patriotism, these sentiments often take a backseat when they coincide with weekends. I believe this is because India’s history of being ruled by various independent monarchies has hindered the development of a unified national pride, even after gaining independence. In contrast, ancient civilizations like Japan have a strong sense of national belonging, as evident in their respect for rules and institutions. A case in point: The bullet train has different tariffs depending upon the speed of the train. However, should you board the train with a lower denomination ticket, there is nothing to worry. There is a kiosk at the railway station where you go and pay the difference in fare. such as paying the correct fare for train tickets. Unfortunately, this is not always the case in India.
Furthermore, the lack of national pride is reflected in the way we treat our armed forces. I recall an incident at Bagdogra airport where I witnessed jawans being asked to wait in the queue for food by the fellow passengers. When I offered one of them my place, he politely refused. It made me wonder if we could have shown more respect and gratitude towards those who risk their lives for our country. In some nations, people stand up as a sign of respect when soldiers enter the room.
Developing patriotic fervor among the youth is essential for fostering a sense of national pride, responsibility, and unity. Here are some effective strategies:
1. National History and Heritage
- Incorporate history lessons that highlight the struggles and achievements of national heroes, freedom fighters, and significant events that shaped the nation. Dandi March is a case in point. Show the clipping where people came in lines to get beaten. Another line of people were ready to take their place even as the wounded were taken for first aid by yet another group.
- Focus on cultural heritage, geography, and diverse contributions from different regions of the country, emphasizing unity in diversity.
2. Promote Civic Engagement
- Encourage volunteerism in community services, social causes, and nation-building activities. This helps youth understand their role in society.
- Involve them in democratic processes, such as awareness about elections – student council elections should be a process to understand this concept. Let them canvass for votes and have a secret ballot followed by a investiture.
3. Celebrate National Days
- Organize events around national days like Independence Day, Republic Day, and Gandhi Jayanti, not just as formal occasions but with innovative, youth-centric activities.
- Youth participation in these celebrations can be heightened through essay competitions, debates, cultural performances, and awareness campaigns. It might also be a great idea to have a discussion on ‘If Gandhi were to visit India today!’.
4. Leverage Media and Social Platforms
- Utilise social media to spread messages of patriotism, national unity, and the significance of national symbols.
- Documentaries, films, and podcasts that narrate inspiring stories of national pride can be used to instill a deeper emotional connection with the country.
5. Encourage Leadership and Responsibility
- Programs like the NCC (National Cadet Corps) or Scouts and Guides encourage discipline, civic duty, and love for the country..
6. Sports
- Sports competitions at the national level, representing one’s country or region, often evoke patriotic pride. The para Olympics is a standing example.
8. Role Models and Mentorship
- Influence of role models like leaders, athletes, and artists who express their love for the nation can inspire youth. Talks by these people can be shown, or they could be invited to the institution.
- Mentorship programs where experienced individuals guide youth in understanding national issues and responsibilities can reinforce patriotic values.
Developing patriotic fervor among the youth is about integrating love for the country with active participation, awareness, and pride in national identity.
